Search and location

Search runs in the browser. "Near me" asks for the device's location only when the button is pressed, and uses it only in the browser to work out distances; it is never sent to the website.

Maps and fonts

The street map on a list page loads from OpenStreetMap's servers, with its code from cdnjs: on a wide screen when the map comes into view, on a phone only when the map button is pressed. Fonts load from Google Fonts. Each of these services sees the visitor's IP address. The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which processes the IP address to serve the pages.

Measuring visits

Plausible Analytics counts visits without cookies and without storing personal data.

Google Analytics is also used to measure visits. It sets cookies and sends Google information about the pages viewed and the visitor's device and approximate location. In the regions where consent is asked (below), it loads only after consent.

Ads

Compass & Chisel shows Google AdSense ads. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies to show ads based on previous visits to this and other websites. The ad services process device and browser information, the IP address, cookie identifiers, and ad impressions and clicks to deliver and measure ads and to prevent fraud. The list of partners and how they use data is in Google's consent message; Google's own use of data is described in how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Personalized ads can be turned off in Google's ad settings and on the advertising industry's opt-out page.

Consent

In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, consent for ads and Google Analytics is asked by Google's consent message. Consent is voluntary, and declining does not limit the use of the website. The choices can be changed or consent withdrawn with the "Privacy settings" button in the footer. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before it.
